Chrysler 200c EV Concept

Emissions Free Commute with Luxury Sedan Comfort

The 2009 Detroit Car Show was an exciting time for Chrysler LLC; they were introducing their electric driven vehicles from their special ENVI department, an electric vehicle research and development group formed to push the release of an electric car by the automaker. The Chrysler 200C EV was one of the cars to be introduced.  This Chrysler concept is an extended-range electric midsize sedan, and is a rear-wheel drive model that uses a shortened version of the platform from Chrysler's acclaimed 300C sedan.   While the 200C was introduced with four other electric vehicles it is unique in that it is the only one not based on a current production car.  The Chrysler 200C EV is a performance sedan in a package that looks spirited and agile. The beautiful, stylish, and technologically savvy Chrysler 200C is in concept design at the moment and should make it to production within the next few years.  Chrysler has promised to roll out at least one ENVI vehicle by 2010, but has not said which one.

2010 Chrysler 200C Design

Although the 200C borrows a platform that underpins the Chrysler 300C, it still has its own style. The 200C creates a modern product statement that appeals to both luxury and sports car enthusiasts. One key element of the design is efficiency as its swept-back front end contributes to the vehicle's aerodynamics.  The body is rounded and torpedo shaped, there is also an evolution of its recognizable grille and winged badge. Eco- and human-friendly water-based exterior finish is used to complete the 'green' image.  The placement of the headlamps and tail lamps on the far corners of the vehicle help to visually reduce the front and rear overhangs and contribute to the vehicle's efficient appearance. The Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle projects a confident stance and proportion with its optimized wheel-to-body relationship. The front fascia is a modern interpretation of the winged Chrysler badge, and its distinct grille continues to shape and evolve Chrysler's brand identity. The encompassed grille bars within the front fascia reinforce the sinuous elegance of the 200C EV concept vehicle with its assertive shape and precise execution.

 Powering the 200C EV

The 200C EV is powered from batteries to provide a 40-mile range on electric power and a small generator to keep them charged on longer trips. That means zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions for 40 miles, enough for many people to commute emissions free. A small internal combustion engine and integrated generator extends the range to 400 miles, using very little gasoline.  To charge the Chrysler 200C just plug it in overnight to a standard 110-volt household outlet. Charging time is cut in half with 220-volt household appliance power outlet.

Inside the Chrysler 200c

The cabin of the 200C is just as impressive as its powertain.  It is full of the connectivity technology, including a PC for the passenger, an in-car vehicle camera for security, and real-time traffic monitoring. Starting the vehicle activates the electronic instrument panel that contains an advanced electronic vehicle information center, the next generation of Chrysler's uconnect infotainment system and a compound touch surface. All vehicle functions managed via a panoramic multimedia touch screen, a passenger-dedicated 'techno leaf' and stowable tablet PC.   Also available is In-car social media capability to create 'buddy vehicles' with technology similar to MySpace, Facebook, and TwitterSM. The main goal for this cabin was to maximize interior comfort, utilize space and create a connected environment.  As far as the materials used in the 200C EV cabin, they are natural, luxurious, and organic. The interior has much emphasis put into open space in the Chrysler 200C EV concept vehicle. A simple touch to the smooth glass surface deploys a personal touch screen computer from the glove box.  An aluminum appliqué dramatically sweeps from the center console, across the instrument panel and onto the passenger's door.

200C Driving and Handling

According to Chrysler the 200C EV can go 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds, less than 15 seconds in the quarter mile, and a top speed of more than 120 mph. The Chrysler 200C EV concept boasts a clean, quiet ride and smooth acceleration, underscoring the engaging driving experience of the Chrysler brand. And with an ability of going 40 miles gasoline free, this is one drive that will save a lot of money at the tank.  The 200C cruises on the highway and behaves well on city roads, it is easily maneuverable and combines the best of sports car driving and luxury sedan capabilities.

Final Words

The all-new Chrysler 200C EV concept is the definitive blend of design and technology redefining the idea of responsible mobility with a touch of class and sophistication never before embodied so elegantly in one vehicle.  A vehicle that evokes timeless beauty, the 200C couples the organic form and language of Chrysler's deep design roots with the noble proportions of the Chrysler 300 to create a modern product statement that appeals to both luxury and sports car enthusiasts. Other ENVI vehicles include the Chrysler Town & Country EV, the Jeep Wrangler EV, the Jeep Patriot EV, and the Dodge Circuit EV. For more research, read another Chrysler 200C review.
